President Message
Half a century ago, people on the streets of China were dressed in Mao suits (Chinese tunic suits), and bicycles were the only form of transport for most. The city streets were lined with brick buildings, and the sidewalks dotted with stalls selling youtiao (fried bread-sticks) and soy milk. Today, people on the streets dress themselves in the latest fashions, bicycles have been replaced by cars and electric motorcycles, and the old buildings and roads by skyscrapers and expressways. The old food stalls on city corners have transformed into stylish cafes. We pride ourselves on our deep familiarity with China, but even for us, the changes appear so profound that China hardly seems like the same country anymore.
These changes are underpinned by the rapid pace of economic expansion that China has achieved through the reforms and liberalization commenced in 1978, and which has transformed it into one of the world's economic powerhouses. Western Japan Trading Co., Ltd. was founded in 1961 as a trading company specializing in Japan-China trade. Over the course of its history, it has stood at the forefront of the Japanese and Chinese economies, contributing to economic development and friendly relations between both countries, by consistently and accurately perceiving the trends and conditions in each era, and engaging in trade to match the nature of the times.
The functions and roles required from trading companies are becoming ever more diverse, amid dramatic changes in Japan-China business. In this context, we have recently focused on providing another level of service on top of the full utilization of our basic function as an international trading company.
To this end, we have reorganized our local bases in China into a structure comprising eight sales bases. Each base is manned by active sales staff with extensive experience, enabling the swift implementation of any necessary surveys or business negotiations for trading, as well as response in case any issues arise. In addition, we have numerous technical advisers with highly specialized abilities, giving us the capability to offer technical proposals and respond to issues in-house. We have also built systems for proprietary after-sale service. In 2019, we established Ichiwa Technology (Changshu) Co., Ltd. in Changshu, Suzhou, to engage in the local installation and maintenance of labor-saving automation equipment and machines.
We will leverage the business resources that we have cultivated so far to expand the scope of our sales into the increasingly prominent ASEAN markets. This year, Western Japan Trading Co., Ltd. celebrates its 60th anniversary. As we pass this milestone, each employee in the Western Japan Trading Group will continue to engage sincerely and earnestly with our trading partners, with a full awareness of our expected role, and consistently strive to provide better service, never forgetting our founding philosophy: to contribute to economic development in Japan and China through trade.
